Tips For Commercial Business Owners When Dealing With Fire Damage

5/12/2022 (Permalink)

Following a fire, to get your business up and running again, on whom should you depend? Are you going to do it yourself? You're certainly not going to ask your employees to provide cleanup services. The best way to recover after a commercial building fire is to call in certified, reputable technicians. If your place of business has experienced fire damage, turn to the experts at SERVPRO.

Why is an expert fire restoration company the best course of action? As an employer, you have a responsibility. Before your workers can return to the premises, you must ensure that proper steps have been taken where fire damage restoration is concerned.

Sure, you want to get your business back up and running as soon as possible. However, there are more reasons for immediate restoration action. If not addressed right away, the impact of water and smoke damage can produce additional negative effects.

When it comes to commercial building fire damage, cleanup, and restoration, what's involved?

Initial Safety Work and Damage Assessment

The extent of damage done to the property must be fully documented before workers can return to work, before the cleanup process can begin, and certainly for the purpose of insurance claims. Professionals can provide the best course of action when it comes to the complicated process of cleaning up after a fire. In fact, in order to process an insurance claim, fire restoration and water removal professionals may be required.

To make sure that additional damage has not been endured by support walls, the roof, windows, etc., you can also rely on experts to verify your commercial building’s safety. Existing damages aside, damage prevention is the name of the game here. Before any cleaning process can be initiated, a thorough investigation must be executed.

It's Time for Water, Smoke, and Soot Removal

Before employees can return to work, specialized cleaners, tools, and techniques are needed to remove soot, smoke, odors, and more from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Additionally, because a lot of water is used by firefighters to extinguish fires, flooding related water issues are bound to develop. To identify potential problems, you will need a professional team. The last thing you want is for mold to take root in your place of business. To put employees’ minds at ease, soot, smoke, and water must be completely eradicated from your commercial property.

Repair, Restoration, Cleanup, Etc.

You can proceed to structure and item cleanup once you've addressed large-scale cleaning needs for fabrics, carpets, and rugs, as well as repairing major structural items. Professionals will likely use special equipment, cleaners, and tools to bring your materials (desks, chairs, floors, etc.) back to life and remove odors.

Tasks like painting, which may seem normal and easy to handle, can be hindered by the bubbling, peeling, or chipping paint that results from fire and water damage. Refinishing, sanding, and large-scale scraping will likely be needed first.

Has Your Business Experienced Fire Damage?

For resolutions where commercial fire damage is concerned, turn to the certified, experienced experts at SERVPRO.

Time is money in the world of business. Don't wait another minute to recover from a fire. Contact us today.

Good Office Cleaning Practices To Implement

5/12/2022 (Permalink)

Even if clients and/or customers never see the office(s) belonging to your company, office cleaning practices are important. For one thing, the health and happiness of your employees can be greatly affected by the cleanliness of your office. The appearance of your office, and how clean you keep it, goes a long way toward defining your company's culture.

To help you in your quest for office cleanliness, we're going to offer a handful of tips. Let's look at some good office cleaning practices to implement.

Adhere to a Schedule

By booking a professional cleaning team, you can have your office cared for by people who not only know what they are doing, but have all tools needed for the job. While encouraging your employees to tidy up after themselves is fine, don't rely on them for regular or deep cleaning. Turn to a trusted company. Work with the company to decide what should be cleaned and when.

Regular Station Cleaning

Employees can certainly tend to their own stations. They can wipe down their keyboard, printer, and monitor. Encourage the use of disinfectant to guard against germ transfer. This can be done daily.

Reduce Clutter

Get rid of the following whenever you can: extra pens, unused coffee mugs, expired calendars, outdated business cards, etc. They make your office look untidy and take up valuable space. They can also be distracting.

Practice Good Hygiene

Along with wiping down common surfaces with disinfectant, make sure when dealing with sensitive electrical equipment, appropriate safety precautions are taken. Confer with professional cleaners if you're in doubt as to how to regularly clean certain surfaces/equipment and what products to use.

Clean As You Go

This is particularly applicable when it comes to break rooms, cafeterias, and the like. Encourage your employees, if they make a mess, to please clean up after themselves. Before leaving the office for the day, also encourage them to make their desks look at least somewhat organized. This will be beneficial for appearances as well as making it easier for your employees to be efficient and productive.

A Place for Everything… And Everything in Its Place

You've heard this before, probably from your mom. But it applies to any work space, including your office. When effective office cleaning is executed, your supplies, files, accessories, etc. are more organized and found in an easier fashion. Anything you don't want handled by the cleaning company, simply put it away in a drawer or cabinet. Enhance office appearances, improve focus, and reduce chaos by maintaining the cleanest office space possible.

At SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City, we handle various types of cleaning jobs including both commercial and residential. Need a major cleanup in a hurry due to a disaster? We offer 24-hour emergency service. If you just need regular cleaning of an office, we can take care of it for you. If you need a sizable cleaning project executed, we've got you covered there, too.

Understanding Government Office Cleaning

5/8/2022 (Permalink)

Understanding Government Office Cleaning

Few offices, government or not, require their employees to do any kind of significant cleanup. Usually, regular cleaning attention is given to hallways, kitchens, bathrooms, and office space by qualified, professional cleaners. The thing about professional cleaners and government offices is that special accommodations are required because some areas are security sensitive.

Where government office cleaning is concerned, how often should you tidy up? Which areas need the most attention? What kind of cleaning should be involved?

Why is the topic of cleaning so important to an office atmosphere? Here's the thing… people feel healthier, more motivated, and happier in an environment that is clean. What exactly is "clean" when it comes to government offices?

Areas Used by Employees

Employee-used areas must be cleaned as well as the offices. Workspaces must be vacuumed, sanitized, and dusted. Lunch areas/kitchens and restrooms must be thoroughly cleaned. Shine them up and disinfect them regularly.

Everyone will be healthier and happier if employee areas are kept clean, tidy, and disinfected.

Dusting and More

Yes, dusting needs to be done on a regular basis. But there's a lot more to cleaning a government office than just that.

Chairs must be kept stain and spot free and straightened daily. Windows should be fingerprint free, floors shined, reception areas vacuumed, and more. Where high traffic spaces exist, any restroom accompanying the area will need extra attention. Sinks and toilet areas must be disinfected. Dirt and grime must be removed from light switches, doors, windows, mirrors, etc.

A pleasant and safe visit will be better ensured if these areas are tidy and sanitized.

Precise Requirements for Trash

For whatever government office needs cleaning, there is likely a required protocol where dealing with trash is concerned. With respect to the handling rules for trash, shredding and or disposal should be appropriately executed. On a regular basis, in kitchens, public areas, and throughout the office, recycling, regular trash pickup, and trash/disposal of sensitive papers and more must be done by the rules.

There may be a need for more than once-a-day trash disposal in extremely high traffic areas.

Safety And Floors

In office spaces, floors not only need to be kept clear of dropped objects and wet spills, they need to be picked up, wet mopped, dry dusted, and/or vacuumed. To help safeguard against accidents, as they arise, safety issues should be addressed. Floor cleanup must be kept up with because, before you know it, high-traffic areas get incredibly dirty.

Benefits Of Regular Restaurant Cleaning

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

One of the biggest turn offs for restaurant customers is uncleanliness. If the food, service or environment isn’t pristine, the customers will never return and may also post negative reviews online which can damage the reputation of the business. Below are the benefits of regular restaurant cleaning.

Cleanliness Boosts Ambiance

Fine dining is about more than just the food; it is also the experience and ambience. While the food must be delicious, the atmosphere must be pleasant and inviting, and the best way to accomplish this is through cleaning the area on a daily basis, both the kitchen and the eating area. Dusty lights, mold, sticky floors or stains on the table will kill the mood instantly in a way that is often impossible to recover.

It Makes the Food Safer

The worst nightmare for any restaurateur is having a customer get sick from eating their food. The consequences of this are so severe that in extreme cases it can lead to the restaurant being closed down, perhaps permanently. This is an area for which no mistakes can be made.

Every single ingredient that you use in your food must be tested and reviewed to ensure it is fresh, healthy and not contaminated in any way, and the equipment you use must also be clean. In most states throughout the U.S, those operating a restaurant are expected to follow stringent health codes; be sure you’re always in compliance with them or the restaurant you worked hard to build could crumble right before your very eyes.

It Makes Customers Want to Return

Repeat customers are worth their weight in gold, yet you have one chance to make a good first impression. If a customer arrives to your eatery for the first time and is not impressed because of something they saw, you’ll never be given a second chance. The restaurant business is highly competitive, especially in major metropolitan areas where there are often hundreds of them. If you want people to come back to your business you’d better give them a good reason to.

Essential Things That Every Restaurateur Should Do

Make your restaurant pest free. Rats, flies and roaches should be kept as far away as possible, which is easier said than done since these annoying critters are attracted to any place that has food. Make sure the trash is taken out daily and hire a professional pest control company to visit your premises on a monthly basis to implement measures to prevent these creatures from gaining a foothold; because once they do it can be very difficult and costly to get them out.

The next step is to hire slowly yet fire quickly. Every employee that works in your restaurant should understand cleanliness and the importance of remaining in compliance, and if they fail to do so you must get rid of them quickly. The owner of the restaurant might not always be present and those that are must be trusted to maintain hygienic standards at all times.

Understanding Manufacturing Plant Cleanliness

4/21/2022 (Permalink)

Manufacturing plant cleanliness is extremely important. A work environment that is covered in oil stains and grease or littered work tools increases the chances of accidents, fires and injuries.  Below are some recommended best practices for those that work in or operate manufacturing facilities.

You Want to Lower Environmental Allergens

Employees don’t want to be exposed to allergens, but this will happen in a work area where dust is allowed to accumulate on the vents. This will lead to higher cases of sneezing and coughing among the workers and if mold starts to spreads things will become worse, as they will develop various respiratory symptoms that can inhibit their ability to do their job.

You Want a Healthy Environment

If your employees are operating in a manufacturing facility that is not frequently cleaned, they may be exposed to bacteria, mold, pathogens and even contagious illness. If multiple workers suddenly become sick simultaneously and are unable to do their jobs, this slams the productivity of your organization not to mention worker’s compensation claims. And if you are found to be violation of state health codes, your plant may be shut down completely.

How fast does sickness spread? Research found that norovirus which was placed on one surface had spread to forty to sixty percent of the people working in the surrounding area in less than two hours. Most manufacturing plants have a cafeteria, and if the kitchens and serving rooms aren’t kept meticulously clean they might harbor food residue which can breed bacteria which in turn can cause foodborne ailments. The food must be properly stored, cooked and served and all utensils, tables and equipment must be sterilized.

Merchandise Quality

The cleanliness and organization of your manufacturing facility will influence of the quality of your finished merchandise. Products which are exposed to dirt, grime or smudges will be unattractive to potential customers and if you’re assembling electronic equipment it may be contaminated in a manner which will compromise its operation or reduce its lifespan. Customers that purchase your product and discover the manufacturing defects may file lawsuits which will damage company finances not to mention your reputation.

Less Maintenance

Manufacturing plants are full of critical machinery which is used to assemble or fabricate finished goods. If this environment isn’t properly cleaned on a frequent basis, the machines may be exposed to spills or leaks which can cause corrosion and rust. The machines will begin to perform poorly over time and may eventually malfunction completely, leading to extremely high replacement or repair costs.

Those who keep their factories clean will require less maintenance which will save them money while minimizing downtime so they can continue assembling and building merchandise at an effective rate. Furthermore, clients, vendors and potential investors who visit the premises will be impressed by the presentation which will increase the likelihood of them wanting to do business with you.

Are You Employing The Right Fire Safety Measures For Hotels?

9/15/2021 (Permalink)

Owning and running a hotel comes with its own set of challenges for both the owner and staff. One of the most important aspects of safety that needs to be considered includes implementing the right fire safety measures for hotels to help avoid costly damage.

Fire Safety Measures for Hotels

According to data shared by the U.S. Fire Administration, approximately 4,000 fires take place at hotels and motels each year which result in at least $100 million worth of property damage. A certain percentage of hotel owners assumes that their fire safety measures are up to industry standards but in actual fact, some steps are often overlooked. Below are some fire safety considerations that hotel owners can review.

Holding Regular Fire Drills and Testing Fire Alarms

Fire alarms are possibly the most important element to hotel safety in the event of a fire. Once an alarm sounds, hotel occupants are immediately aware of the situation and can make their way out of the property quickly. Unfortunately, most hotels do not have their fire alarms adequately checked and tested from time to time. This is the reason why it is critical to conduct regular fire alarm tests.

During a fire alarm test, its control panels need to be set to test mode to avoid notifying emergency services. Once this has been done, press the fire alarm button to test the system. Test results need to be recorded for future reference. For faulty alarms, have them replaced immediately to prevent problems in the event of a fire.

Regular fire drills are also important to prepare staff members on the correct evacuation procedures and for the management to highlight any areas that need to be improved.

Keep Fire Extinguishers Close

All hotels need to be equipped with fire extinguishers rated class A, B, and C which can extinguish small fires involving paper, wood, gas, and oil. Fire extinguishers need to be placed within 75 feet from a hotel property but guestrooms are not required to be equipped with any as there are already several placed in the hallway. Fire extinguishers also need to be check regularly to ensure they are at the proper gauge or weight limit.

Decluttering

Hallways, rooms, and common areas need to be free of clutter to ensure fire safety can be maintained at all times. It just takes a small flame to turn cluttered spaces into an uncontrollable fire. Things like boxes, equipment, or trash need to be moved and stored at appropriate places to allow occupants to move quickly in the event of a fire.

Regular Inspections

Hotels need to have their fire alarms, lights, fire extinguishers, and sprinklers inspected at least once a year. If these are neglected, they may cause costly fire damage. Professionally inspecting these items can ensure that any problems can be addressed at an early stage to prevent bigger issues.

Commercial Fire Damage Insurance

Fire damage can be costly and hotels without commercial fire damage insurance can be slapped with hefty damage costs. Ensure that your hotel has sufficient coverage in the event of a fire.

The process needs the support of high-powered equipment like air scrubbers to clean the air from harmful particulates and persistent odors. Industrial dehumidifiers and air movers are also used to mitigate residual water and any traces of moisture in the air.

Smoke Odors

Commercial fires leave behind a pungent odor which is also present in most cases of fire. The odor permeates through the whole building, fixtures, furnishings, and air. The odor comes from various sources which are a result of the fire itself. The soot, debris, and residual water all contribute towards producing the pungent odor. After the origin and cause of the fire have been determined, restoration experts need to quickly move into the building to remove the soot and debris from the premises to get rid of the pungent odor.

Soot Removal

Thick layers of soot that are already mixed with residual water are often seen at fire sites. Soot is the powdered carbon in black and chemical byproduct of the burned materials. The chemical composition of soot depends on the types of material that were burnt in the building. Some acidic compounds may cause further damage to the building surfaces and discolor or stain plastics, granite, grout and other fixtures that were not burned.

The good news is that fires caused by smoking materials are on the decline due to the introduction of “fire safe” cigarettes. However, it still remains amongst the top five causes of commercial fires. How Clearing Dust In Ducts in Your Business Can Aid Mold Prevention

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

It is common for business owners to deal with mold in their vents and ducts. Having a mold problem in your establishment is not only unsightly and annoying, but it can also cause reduce the air quality thus affecting customers entering and employees working. However, it is not easy to get rid of a mold infestation. This is why it is crucial to prevent mold from growing in the first place. In this article, we will explain how clearing dust in vents and ducts within your business can aid mold prevention. Read on to find out more.

Importance of Cleaning Vents and Ducts

If you own an HVAC system, you might be familiar with how easily mold colonies can form in the vents and ducts. An HVAC system that is not cleaned regularly and has humidity issues provides mold with the ideal environment to thrive. When mold starts growing in the vents and ducts, it is possible that the mold growth can spread an unpleasant odor to the adjacent rooms. As time passes, the mold may be able to spread across the entire ductwork in the business. This will greatly affect the indoor air quality which will reduce the level of comfort in your commercial space.

Causes of Mold in Vents and Ducts

Mold grows well in moist conditions. Vents and ducts are especially prone to moisture accumulation when cold air travels through them. Due to the area being enclosed, the water in the vents and ducts starts collecting instead of evaporating. With dead skin cells, dust, and other dirt, the vents and ducts become very suitable for mold to grow.

Identifying Mold in Vents

In some cases, you can see mold growth in the form of black streaks in the vents and around ducts. However, mold growth can also be hidden from plain sight. If you smell a musty odor, it is a sign that there is mold growing. In addition, as the air quality becomes poorer, an even bigger problem may just be waiting to form. You may eventually realize that the comfort level in the establishment is slowly deteriorating.

How to Keep Vents and Ducts Clear

To keep the vents and ducts clear, condensation must be reduced in the ductwork. You can do so by insulating the air ducts. To increase the rate of evaporation and prevent water from pooling, try placing dehumidifiers near vents and ducts. For a greater peace of mind, consider getting a professional mold prevention and removal company to conduct a check on your ductwork annually.

Understanding Ceiling Cleaning Safety For Your Commercial Space

Meta description: If you are thinking about cleaning your ceilings, read on to understand ceiling cleaning safety before carrying out the cleaning activity.

Understanding Ceiling Cleaning Safety

Cleaning normal ceilings is hard enough, but the challenge adds on when you have high or vaulted ceilings. These ceilings may look beautiful, but they often trap dust in places that are difficult to reach, making it a pain to clean them. Without a proper cleaning, build up can occur and become very visible. It is crucial to clean the ceilings regularly while taking care to mind your safety while doing it. If you are thinking about cleaning your ceilings, read on to understand ceiling cleaning safety before carrying out the cleaning activity.

Wear Goggles and a Mask

When cleaning the ceiling, you will be looking straight up, which exposes the eyes to the microscopic dust particles that fall as they are being cleaned off. To protect the eyes, wear a pair of goggles or a full protective mask to block out the dust particles.

Telescopic Cleaning Poles

It is unsafe to be on tall ladders when you are cleaning high ceilings. Besides the inconvenience of having to constantly move the ladder as each part of the ceiling is being cleaned, there is a real danger of falling over if one is not careful. Instead, use a telescopic cleaning pole to clean the ceiling. This means that you can safely stand on the floor while being able to clean every nook and cranny of the ceiling.

Forked Dusters for Ceiling Fans

Ceilings that have fans are more troublesome to clean because of the individual fan blades that need to be dusted down. To make things easier, get a forked duster and attach it to the end of the telescopic cleaning pole.

Start High and End Low

If you are cleaning the whole business, start cleaning from the places that are high up and slowly work your way down. This is because dust particles will inevitably fall from the places above and land on the areas below despite having dusters to catch them, so it makes more sense to clean the ceilings first, then the walls, furniture, and the floors last. Do a final vacuum of the area after dusting to make sure that all the dust has been gotten rid of.

Now you're panicking, you ask yourself how you're going to get water out of a 10,000 square ft. room. You know you don't have nearly enough mops or buckets to clean something of that size.
